Will my pokemon be strong if I don't focus on EV and IV training?

I have pokemon pearl, and I was wondering if my pokemon will be strong if it only fought other trainers and wild pokemon, without focusing on EVs and IVs. I definitely know it will not be as strong as it could be with it, but is it still strong?
